Status comes from Health Canada's Drug Product Database, read when this page was built (November 3, 2026). "Marketed" means the maker has told Health Canada it is selling the product; it does not guarantee your pharmacy has stock. Dr. Reddy's has reported a supply halt since July 2026 that its database entry does not show.
In person or online, side by side
With a prescription, a pharmacy counter is cheapest. Without one, an online prescriber bundles the consult, medication and shipping into one monthly price.

Cash price for one four-week pen including the dispensing fee, before insurance. Rows marked Audited come from a published August 2026 retail phone audit of Canadian pharmacy counters; rows marked Estimated are modelled from the public list price, a province factor and the chain’s dispensing fee. Prices change; confirm with the pharmacy before you fill.
Brand Ozempic is shown before Novo Nordisk’s savings card, which is meant to bring it to about the generic price outside Quebec for people without public coverage. Online plans cost more because the consult, prescriber oversight and shipping are bundled in; their prices come from each provider's published pricing. Some provider links may earn a referral fee; that never changes the order of this table, which is by price.
What changed in 2026
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic, approved in Canada for type 2 diabetes since 2018. For years only Novo Nordisk could sell it here. That ended because of two dates: Novo let its main Canadian patent lapse in 2020 by missing a maintenance fee,1 and the data protection that blocked generic copies expired on January 4, 2026.2
Health Canada approved Dr. Reddy's generic on April 28 and Apotex's Apo-Semaglutide on May 1, and called Canada the first G7 country to do so.3,4 Apotex began shipping to pharmacies on May 19 at a wholesale price the Globe and Mail put at $78.14 for four weeks, against $240.48 for Ozempic.5,6 In June came Sevmia, Apotex's copy of Wegovy and the first generic for weight management, though it is still not on sale.7
Then supply wobbled. Dr. Reddy's reported a shortage on July 10 and halted new batches over an ingredient problem,8 and four recalls of specific lots, two for each maker, followed in August and September. Sandoz and Aspen have approvals but no launch date, and Health Canada lists nine more filings under review.9,10
Novo answered with a savings card that brings brand Ozempic toward the generic price for cash and privately insured buyers outside Quebec.11 Ontario's drug plan now pays $78.14 per pen for any of them, Ozempic included.12
At the counter, news reports put the generic at roughly $100 a month,13 so the cheapest choice now depends on your prescription, your province and your plan. Three questions will tell you which route costs least.

Is generic semaglutide available in Canada?
Yes. Health Canada has approved six generic semaglutide products since April 28, 2026. Apotex's Apo-Semaglutide has been shipping to pharmacies since May 19, 2026.
Dr. Reddy's version reached pharmacies in May but its supply has been halted since July. Sandoz, Aspen and Apotex's generic Wegovy (Sevmia) are approved but not yet sold.
Is generic semaglutide the same as Ozempic?
It has the same active ingredient in the same weekly doses up to 1 mg. Health Canada describes the generics as pharmaceutically equivalent to Ozempic, after checking that differences in how they are made do not affect safety, effectiveness or quality. The maker, the pen and the price differ, and there is no generic 2 mg dose.
How much does generic semaglutide cost?
At the cheapest pharmacy counter, Costco Pharmacy, a four-week pen costs about $92 cash including the dispensing fee. Most chains charge $92 to $123.
Ontario's public drug plan pays $78.14 per pen before markup and fees. Brand Ozempic costs more at the counter, but outside Quebec Novo Nordisk's savings card is meant to bring it close to the generic price for people paying cash or using private coverage.
Do I need a prescription for generic semaglutide?
Yes. It is a prescription-only medicine in every province. If you have no family doctor, a licensed online prescriber can assess you and, if appropriate, write the prescription.
Does insurance cover generic semaglutide?
Public plans cover semaglutide for type 2 diabetes when their criteria are met, and Ontario now pays only the generic price of $78.14 per pen. No province covers it for weight loss. Many private plans pay only up to the generic price once your province lists it as interchangeable.
Can my pharmacist switch me from Ozempic to the generic?
Usually, if your province lists the generic as interchangeable and your prescription allows substitution. Ask the pharmacist to show you the new pen, because the device and its markings differ even at the same dose.
